Cement rendering is the process of applying a mix of sand, cement and water to a masonry surface to create a smooth or textured finish. It has been the standard for exterior wall finishing across Australia for decades. When done well, it gives a property a clean, solid appearance and protects the underlying masonry from weathering and moisture.

The material is tougher and more rigid than acrylic render. That rigidity makes it well-suited to base coats and to surfaces that need a hard, durable finish. On new builds, cement render is commonly applied over brick and block work before a top coat or paint finish. On renovation jobs, it is used to cover crumbling or failed old render, to even out uneven substrates and to prepare walls for a decorative finish.

Preparation is everything. Before any cement render goes on the wall, the surface needs to be checked for loose material, moisture issues and any structural problems that would cause the render to fail later. A poorly prepared wall will cause the render to crack or delaminate regardless of how well it is applied.
